RE: missing generator cover

Exactly what cover are you refering to? Post pictures or part numbers please. Some covers probably are no big deal, some covers you should not run the engine more than a couple of minutes without load.

RE: Location of fuel filter on Cummins 8.3

Cummins includes a fuel filter in the C 8.3 engine as supplied to the chassis makers. In the injection pump side of the engine between the lift pump and the injection pump. Some engines have (2) mounted side by side.

RE: Kohler Generator question

I don't understand the question you're asking. You want a parts manual for a genset but don't know the model number. Kohler made a whole lot of them, as they made them they went through changes and assigned different spec numbers to reflect these changes. Just a model number isn't going to get you real far with Kohler, that spec number is what is going to make it all come together. The best starting point would be for you to get the model number, spec number and the serial number off of the machine data tag. With those, I can come up with the parts, service and operators manual for that machine. If your machine does not have a data tag, about the only way you are going to have any sucess in your search is to find someone with an exact same model and use his numbers.

RE: Onan Guru help

Sounds like you have a dead battery. Might also want to check your connections and charger.

RE: generator oil synthetic ?

I'd strongly recommend its use in an air cooled engine due to synthetics resistance to thermal break down. Them air cooled engines do run hot.

RE: Lost diesel power

Was it making any unusual noises? Like air leaking? If you have a boot or a clamp off, you'd probably hear it. Shouldn't run real bad with a boot off, just not make a lot of power, should make enough to get you to 50 or 55. Think Glen might be the man who figured it out. That would be where I'd look if it wasn't making leaking air noise. Let us know what you find.

RE: Onan 10k diesel overheating

Crawl under there and look to be sure that no debris from the road like cardboard, a shopping bag, plastic is partially restricing air flow. I'd think an air lock would have worked its way out by now, it might have overheated a time or two but eventually they work it out. Hope it hasn't overheated the engine to the point of cracking the head, then it will over heat.

RE: ISC 330 Problem

Well those who have never been around an ether explosion, take it from me, you don't want to be. Like Wolfe pointed out, that if ether hit the air box heater grid and there will be a few folks standing around with a stunned look on the face and a ringing in their ears that won't go away for a couple of days. Good chance of damage to the MH. Might get away with it a time or two but sooner or later you will be a believer. Yes the ISC has a grid heater in the air induction system.

RE: Gas vx Diesel performance?

Not as much about horse power as its about torque.

RE: ISC 330 Problem

Starting fluid is a big no-no with these engines. Take it to Cummins. Have them plug in, bet they won't have to wait on a computer anything and get right to the heart of the problem.

RE: Onan 5500 won't run!

Can't give you any meaningful advice without make/model/spec/serial number. Gas or propane? If propane liquid or vapor withdrawl? Mechanical governor or electronic?

RE: Only half power from generator

If you are planning on replacing the existing genset, consider a Honda. Honda makes a radiator cooled RV genset, either 6500 or 6800 watt, don't remember which. Well made, reasonably priced and like all the Honda stuff got good support. Agree with Billy, that Generac stuff is something I'd stay away from, a long ways away. You might get it at a slightly better price on the front side but when you need service or repair, get ready to empty your wallet.

RE: Strange Onan Problem for the experts

Start with grounds. Genset to mounting tray, mounting tray to MH frame. Trash in the carburetor that some times gets sucked up. Air filter or hose collapsing. Just a couple og thoughts.

RE: Onan microquit 4000 Help

Main jet is installed in a manner to prevent it from being removed without wrecking it. Ruined more than one in my younger daze trying to get them out.

Hope they didn't charge yo for a carburetor and voltage regulator you didn't need or 20 hours to change a fule filter.

RE: Problems with AC compressor when running generator

If under warranty, take it in. Like the old shop sign: Labor rates: $100 per hour. If you watch $120.00 per hour If you help $135.00 per hour If you worked on it yourself $150.00 per hour

RE: Cummins C8.3L Lubricating Oil Cooler

Like John says, very unusual for an oil cooler to fail. Symptoms of a failed oil cooler are oil in the coolant. Most Cummins 8.3C are equipped with a coolant filter, mounted on the top of the oil cooler, above the oil filter. This filter will be mounted horizontally, not vertically like the oil and fuel filters. These filters, in addition to filtering particles out of the coolant, also have a charge of a coolant conditioner. Depends on the level of the coolant additive package will depend on what filter to install, how many units of additive is in there. Don't just put on any filter, test the coolant first, determine which filter you need and then replace the existing filter. There is a shut off valve built into the base of the filter. If the cooling system has been flushed and filled with extended life coolant, the filter system may have been removed from this engine. Extended life coolant should be red or orange. Regular coolant which requires SCA (DCA or whatever the particular manufacturer calls it). Antifreeze never looses it ability to protect against freezing, however, the additives that protect against cavitation (very important in an engine wit wet liners and the Cummins C 8.3 has wet liners) rust, foaming and proper ph balance deplete over time. The additives, SCA, DCA, whatever replenish these additives. Be aware that too much of a good thing becomes bad so use the test strips which are avalible from Cummins, NAPA or a WIX filter distributor. A good Cummins tech will have a bottle full of test strips and would probably test your coolant for free as a good will gesture. I did. I doubt your overheating problem has anything to do with the oil cooler and is probably caused by a dirty or partially clogged radiator core. Do a search here on "slobber tubes" By the way, while on the subject of oil coolers, oil flow through your oil cooler is thermostatically controlled. Means there is a thermostat that should work to maintain oil temperature. Only way that I know of to see if it is working (have not seen one fail yet) is to monitor oil and coolant temperature. When running with load, oil temperatures will typically run a few degrees higher than the coolant temperature. Should oil temperatures exceed 240 degrees, you have a problem that needs to be addressed.

RE: Onan 5500 Generator

Model/spec/serial number would be a good starting point. That it is in a '03 Neptune, whatever that is, is not information helpful for genset problem diagnosis.

RE: Only half power from generator

I think they put an amateur on it. It should take less than a half an hour to determine what is wrong. Unless it is exceptionally hard to get out, they shold have been able to diagnose the problem, remove it from the MH, repair it and reinstall it in less than 4 hours. Along with the mark up they take on parts, they could have made a nice profit off of you and sent you on your way happy. Ask them what the published standard shop rate is to diagnose this problem, bet its way under 4.5 hours. Also, very doubtful that both rotor and stator are bad. Ask for them to put it in writing as to the proceedure they used to come to the diagnosis they came up with. Did they use a certified technician to do this? One certified by Onan as a RV genset technician? Hope it wasn't the summer help taking a break from sweeping the floor getting experience at your expense.

RE: Generator wont start ??

Model/spec/serial number of the genset wold be a good starting point. Then we see what you see. You'd think I was pretty dumb suggestiong you check the fuse to the electric fuel pump if it didn't have one, wouldn't you? Shoot some WD 40 into the carburetor while cranking it over and see what happens. If it tries to start, fuel problem, either fule supply or a gummed up carburetor. Works better with the air filter off. Some slide outs have 2 obvious bolts and then 2 more in the back.
